Tim Jensen (born 1950) is a Danish scholar specializing in the academic study of religion. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark and an Honorary Professor at Leibniz University Hannover. His research focuses on ancient Greek religion, religion in public discourse and education, and methodologies in the study of religion.[1][2]
Academic career
Jensen received his Magister Artium (mag.art.) in History of Religions from the University of Copenhagen in 1980, presenting a study on “hybris” in Homeric epics. He taught Religion and Ancient Greek Civilization at Christianshavns Gymnasium from 1981 to 1995.[1]
In 1995, he became Assistant Professor, and from 1998 Associate Professor, in the Department for the Study of Religions at the University of Southern Denmark. He was appointed Honorarprofessor at Leibniz University Hannover in 2016.[1]
Leadership and service
Jensen has held numerous leadership roles within the academic study of religion:
- President of the Danish Association for the History of Religions (1997–2005)
- General Secretary of the European Association for the Study of Religions (2000–2004)[1]
- General Secretary of the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR) from 2005 to 2015, and President from 2015 onward.[3]
He has also chaired NORREL, been Head of the Department at University of Southern Denmark, and served on editorial boards of journals including Temenos, Numen, and British Journal of Religious Education.[1]
Consultancy and public engagement
Jensen co-founded DACOREC (Danish Consultancy on Religion, Education, and Culture) in 1988. He has worked as a consultant for public institutions, NGOs, the media, and educational authorities on matters of religion, intercultural dialogue, and human rights.[4]
He is also active in public discourse and media commentary in Denmark regarding religious education and comparative religion.[5]
