Tim Dean is an Australian philosopher, writer and media commentator, and author of How We Became Human: And Why We Need to Change (2021)[1], published by Pan Macmillan Australia. He is the Senior Philosopher at The Ethics Centre and an Honorary Associate at the University of Sydney.[2]

Education

Dean received a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from Macquarie University in 1999 and earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of New South Wales in 2014 with a thesis on evolution and moral diversity.[3]

Work

After completing his undergraduate degree, Dean worked as a technology journalist at PC Authority magazine, and served as the editor of that magazine from 2001 to 2004. He subsequently worked as a science writer and editor, editing Cosmos magazine from 2007 to 2008 and Australian Life Science magazine from 2011 to 2014. He was the science and technology editor at The Conversation from 2015 to 2017. He joined The Ethics Centre as Senior Philosopher in 2022.[4]

In 2015 Dean was the recipient of the Australasian Association of Philosophy Media Professionals' Award for his work on philosophy in the public sphere.[5]

Dean is the author of How We Became Human: And Why We Need to Change (2021), which is about how humans evolved in very different social and ecological environments to today, and the psychological tendencies and cultural traits that were adaptive in those environments are often mismatched with the modern post-industrial world, leading to social problems like racism, sexism, religious intolerance and political polarisation.[citation needed]

Dean is a regular contributor to ABC radio programs including Nightlife,[6] a fortnightly ethics discussion on Afternoons with Josh Szeps[7] and has been a guest multiple times on Self Improvement Wednesday with Richard Glover.[8]
