Thor Ulvedal Simonsen is a Danish/Canadian artist, songwriter, music producer, author, and entrepreneur. Simonsen is the founder of Hitmakerz and Nunavut Music.
Background
Thor Simonsen was born on November 5, 1987, in Torshavn, Faroe Islands. Simonsen spent his childhood moving between Denmark and Canada. In 2001, he graduated from Inuksuk High School. In 2010, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Interactive Design from the Danish School of Media and Design in Copenhagen. In 2014, Simonsen attended Den Rytmiske Højskole for music production. His father is a classical bassist with the Sinfonietta and his mother is an architect and fashion designer.
Music
In 2008, Thor released his first solo album, International. In 2009, he joined the Faroese pop group FAROE5. They toured around the Faroe Islands and had a local hit with the single Tell Me Now, pt. 2. In 2014, Simonsen had another local hit in Nunavut with the single Calling 867, a remix of 8-6-6-0 by Danish singer Peter Sommer. In 2015, Simonsen partnered with Kelly Fraser to create a series of music workshops for Inuit youth. In 2016, Simonsen produced Fraser’s sophomore album, Sedna, which received a Award nomination for Best Indigenous Album of the Year. In 2017, he released his sophomore solo album, Territorial. Simonsen has produced albums for many prominent Inuit artists, including Aasiva (Aakuluk Music), Angela Amarualik, Joey Nowyuk, Looee (Juno-award nominee), Shauna Seeteenak, and Qattuu. Simonsen’s style combines electronic music with traditional Inuit throat-singing and other cultural sounds.
Writing
In 2001, Simonsen released “Paperboy”, a collection of comic strips published in Nunatsiaq News. In 2017, he released “How to Buy a House in Nunavut”.
Entrepreneur
In addition to his own music, the label has released music by Hyper-T, Brenda Montana, Agaaqtoq, Aocelyn, Ehski, Jacob Okatsiak, JD Mike, Qattuu, and many others. Hitmakerz works with notable music producers such as Tev Sound, Dale Penner, and Grammy-award-winning producer Chris Birkett(Sinéad O’Conner, Mango Groove, Buffy Sainte-Marie). In 2022, Simonsen founded Nunavut Music, the territory’s first music industry association designed to support Nunavummiut musicians and industry professionals.
Television
Simonsen has helped to produce several music videos, including Nalligigakku (Because I Love Her) and Pray. Simonsen has also appeared in various documentary films, including NFC’s Qallunaat! Why White People Are Funny (2006), Et døgn på Den Rytmiske Højskole (2013), and DR’s popular tv-show Anne og Anders i Kanada (2023).
