Thomas Potthast

Thomas Potthast (*1963) is a German biologist and philosopher.

He is the spokesperson of the International Centre for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities (IZEW) at the University of Tübingen.

Life

After studying biology and philosophy in Freiburg and Tübingen (diploma 1993), he was a scholarship holder in the DFG Research Training Group "Ethics in the Sciences" and a research assistant at the IZEW. In 1998 he completed his doctorate, which was published in 1999 with the title "Evolution and Nature Conservation".

1998 - 2001 he was a post-doc at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and in 2002 a Feodor Lynen Fellow of the Humboldt Foundation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In 2010, he habilitated and received authorisation to teach in the subject area of ethics, theory and history of science.

In the winter semester 2010/11, he held the chair at the Institute for the History of Medicine, Natural Sciences and Technology at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. This was followed by an appointment as an associate professor in May 2012.

Since December 2014, he has been the spokesperson of the IZEW together with Regina Ammicht Quinn. In April 2016, he took over the chair from Eve-Marie Engels and has since been Professor of Ethics, Theory and History of the Life Sciences at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Department of Biology at the University of Tübingen, as well as at the IZEW.[1]
