Thomas Benedikter (*19 June 1957 in Bozen/Bolzano) is a South Tyrolean economist, political researcher and essayist, active in civic education, political consultancy and publishing. Index

Life

Benedikter studied political economy and political science in Innsbruck, Munich, Trento and Berlin. Besides his professional activity in empirical social and economic research in his native region (Province of Bolzano) Benedikter has been continuously active since 1980 in various political, educational and civic engagements, starting with work for peace and disarmament, North-South solidarity, human and minority rights, students' and workers' rights and for more democracy and political participation of citizens.[1] Since 1984, Benedikter has been co-founder and director of various civic engagement organisations: he was a member of the board of the South Tyrol Student Union ASUS-SH, and of the Institute for Labour Promotion IPL-AFI, he was director of the South Tyrolean section of the international NGO 'Association for Threatened Peoples' and of the World Culture Library in Bozen, co-founder of the NGO 'Initiative for More Democracy', vice-president of PRO NEPAL and co-founder of the Ilse Waldthaler Foundation for Civic Courage. For more than two years, Benedikter took part in research and humanitarian cooperation projects in Latin America, the Balkans (Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina) and South Asia (Nepal, Kashmir, North-East India), from which he produced a series of publications on ethnic conflicts, the protection of ethnic minorities and territorial autonomy. From 2003 to 2009 Benedikter worked for the European Academy EURAC in Bolzano on comparative research programmes on territorial autonomies in the world. Since 2013 he has been the director in charge of the POLITiS study centre for civic education and political research. He works as a freelance author[2] and research assistant at the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano.
