Theodoros Kolydas is a mathematician and meteorologist, as well as director of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service. He was born in 1959 in Stenies, Andros. He graduated from Empirikeio Nautical high school in 1976. He studied mathematics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and later undertook post-graduate work in Meteorology at the Physics Department of the University of Athens. He taught mathematics at high school level for two years. Since 1986, he has been working for the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, primarily in forecasting weather. He has been the head of the department of the School of Meteorology within the agency as well as its general director. He has specialized in matters of utilization of meteorological data for civil services and has represented Greece in relevant European Organizations, while also playing a significant role in dealing with Civil Protection issues in cooperation with the National Center for Public Administration and Self-Government. From 1996 until 2018 he was the head meteorologist of Mega Channel in Greek TV. In 2019, he joined Star Channel (Greek TV channel) and is in charge of issuing the weather report.[1][2][3][4] Kolydas has also written a book called "The story of a butterfly" ("Η ιστορία μιας πεταλούδας") about the history of meteorology from the ancient years to the present times as well as the role that weather phenomena played at important historical events.[5]
