The New Republic

The New Republic is a monthly magazine published in the United States that provides commentary on politics, current culture, and the arts. Established in 1914 by a group of progressive leaders, it sought to strike a balance between "liberalism rooted in humanitarian and moral emotion" and "liberalism grounded in the scientific analysis" by combining the two. As time went on, the journal began to integrate aspects of the Third Way and conservatism into its editorial content.

In 2014, two years after Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes bought the magazine, he fired its editor and tried to restructure the publication's format, operations, and political positions, prompting the departure of the vast majority of the magazine's editors and writers in the process. As of early 2016, Hughes has decided to sell the magazine, citing the need of "fresh vision and leadership" in the industry. The magazine was purchased by Win McCormack in February 2016, and under his leadership, the journal has reverted to a more progressive position. Having been published weekly or almost weekly for the majority of its existence, the magazine now produces 10 issues each year.
