History

The 1980's saw a rise of ecotourism in India, with travellers looking for resorts that were built on sustainable models [6]. Pawan Hooja, who owned the property in the Lonavala area of the Western Ghats, decided to create a single treehouse for a select group of people. It was simply called the "machan", which is the Hindi word for a treehouse. Over the next few years, the word of this sustainably built tree-house, which also had the best of comforts, slowly spread amongst people from Mumbai (then known as Bombay) and a total of 29 tree houses were added over the next 20 years.

To ensure that the resort did not adversely impact the environment, the owners built their own sources of sustainable energy and the resort draws more than 90% of its power requirements from renewable sources such as solar and wind [7].
