The Church in the Flesh is a book written by Ida Friederike Görres in 1950. It was translated from German into English by Jennifer S. Bryson and published in 2023 by Cluny Media.[1] Görres, a Catholic author, first published the book in German as Die leibhaftige Kirche: Gespräch unter Laien.[2]

Themes

The book consists of six "letters." These are essays written in the form of engaging letters from Görres to laypeople, mostly to women. Her interlocutors are Catholics who are confused and disoriented in their Catholic faith; they are trying to follow the zeitgeist and are unsure how or even whether the Catholic Church is compatible with being modern.

The six letters address the following topics: 1. Material manifestations of faith, 2. What the Church is, 3. The nature of belief, 4. Morality, 5. Why Christ is King (not just a nice guy who helps people), 6. The saints and the significance of sanctity.

English Edition

The English edition includes a biographical essay about Ida Friederike Görres by Alfons Rosenberg in 1961, translated here for the first time into English.[3] The cover of the 2023 English edition features the painting "The Christening" from 1920 by Gonzalo Bilbao.[4]

The English edition has a Foreword by German theologian Leo Scheffczyk, which he wrote for the German edition of 1994.[5]
