Thendri Supriatno, MBA (born November 1, 1956, in Cirebon) is an Indonesian Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) expert, sustainability consultant, and social entrepreneur widely recognized as the "Father of CSR in Indonesia" (Bapak CSR Indonesia).[1] He is the founder and chairman of the Corporate Forum for Community Development (CFCD), established in 2002, and the founder of the Indonesian Shared Value Institute (ISVI).[2]
Early life and education
Thendri Supriatno was born on November 1, 1956, in Cirebon, Indonesia. From a young age, he was instilled with the values of sharing and giving back to the community by his parents, who would give him money to donate at the mosque. This early exposure to philanthropy deeply influenced his life's work.[3] He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Ir.) and a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Career
Thendri Supriatno began his career in the corporate sector, working for established companies in Indonesia. However, his passion for social impact and sustainable development led him to make a pivotal decision in 2002: leaving his comfortable corporate position to dedicate himself full-time to building Indonesia's CSR ecosystem.
Founding of CFCD
In September 2002, Thendri co-founded the Corporate Forum for Community Development (CFCD) at Hotel Millennium, Jakarta, alongside Drs. colleagues.[4] CFCD was established as a non-profit organization aimed at promoting best practices in corporate social responsibility across industries in Indonesia. Under his leadership, CFCD has grown to include over 120 member companies from various sectors including mining, telecommunications, and manufacturing.
At the 3rd National Conference of CFCD in 2011, Thendri revealed that member companies had collectively disbursed over five trillion Indonesian rupiah (approximately USD 350 million) for poverty alleviation and community development programs.[5]
Indonesian CSR Award and ISDA
Thendri pioneered the establishment of the Indonesian CSR Award (ICA) and the Indonesia Sustainable Development Goals Award (ISDA), platforms designed not merely as awards ceremonies but as venues for sharing best practices and implementing SNI ISO 26000:2013 standards on social responsibility.[6]
Recognizing the evolving landscape of corporate responsibility, Thendri founded the Indonesian Shared Value Institute (ISVI) in 2017 to integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and Creating Shared Value (CSV) concepts into Indonesia's business strategies.[7] ISVI focuses on promoting circular economy principles, climate resilience, and social inclusion as core elements of sustainable business practices.
Philosophy and impact
Thendri Supriatno is known for his advocacy that CSR should not be viewed merely as a cost or image-building exercise, but as an integral part of sustainable business strategy. He emphasizes three fundamental principles: companies must excel in profit, social responsibility, and environmental stewardship—the triple bottom line approach.[8]
His leadership has transformed Indonesia's CSR landscape over more than two decades. Hundreds of companies have strengthened their social programs, trillions of rupiah have been channeled to communities, and the national business paradigm has shifted to recognize sustainability as a genuine competitive advantage rather than mere rhetoric.[5]
Recognition
Thendri Supriatno is widely referred to as the "Father of CSR in Indonesia" (Bapak CSR Indonesia) and the "Architect of Indonesia's CSR and ESG Ecosystem." His tireless advocacy and educational efforts have been instrumental in establishing CSR as a standard practice among Indonesian corporations, particularly publicly listed companies.
Personal life
Thendri Supriatno is married and has three children. He continues to be actively involved in CSR and sustainability initiatives across Indonesia.
