Terria is an Australian geospatial software company associated with the development of web-based spatial data visualisation software.[1][2]
The company is linked to the development of TerriaJS, an open-source JavaScript library that originated within CSIRO's Data61 division.[3][1]
History
The software that later became TerriaJS was first developed in 2014 by a team at National ICT Australia (NICTA), which subsequently became part of CSIRO's Data61.[4][3]
The project formed the technical foundation of NationalMap, a federal government web application integrated with data.gov.au.[5][4] that enabled the visualisation of publicly available spatial datasets published by Australian government agencies[5]
The software underlying NationalMap was later released as open-source under the name TerriaJS.[3]
In 2024, members of the original development team established Terria Pty Ltd as a commercial entity offering hosted and managed services based on TerriaJS[1].[6]
Software
TerriaJS is a front-end JavaScript library for building interactive web-based mapping applications and is released under the Apache License 2.0.[3]
The library uses WebGL for rendering and is built on top of CesiumJS, supporting two-dimensional and three-dimensional visualisation of spatial data and a range of open geospatial standards.[3]
