Tarun Souradeep (born 1967) is an Indian astrophysicist and cosmologist who currently serves as the Director of the Raman Research Institute (RRI) in Bengaluru.[1] His research focuses on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and is a part of the group involved in the establishment of gravitational-wave astronomy in India, specifically through the LIGO-India project.[2][3]

Education and early career

Souradeep graduated with a B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) in 1988.[4] After this, he went to work in automobile design at Eicher, but he soon changed his field of work to physics.[5] He joined the first batch of students at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, and earned his PhD in Gravitation and Cosmology in 1995 under the supervision of Jayant Narlikar.[6]

Academic career

Souradeep was appointed as a faculty member at IUCAA in late 2000 and formed a research subgroup on CMB research.[7] He remained there until 2019 and eventually became a Senior Professor. He has been the Chair of the Physics Department at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune (IISER Pune) from 2019 to 2022.[8] He assumed the charge of Director of the Raman Research Institute on January 20, 2022.[9][10]

Scientific contributions

His research focuses on testing the underlying assumptions of the standard cosmological model.[11]

Cosmic Microwave Background research

Souradeep developed the Bipolar Spherical Harmonic (BipoSH) formalism, which provides a methodology for measuring mathematical violations of statistical isotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB).[12] Souradeep led the sole Indian group within the international core team of the Planck mission.[13][14]

Gravitational Wave astronomy

Souradeep was a part of the LIGO consortium that made the first direct detection of gravitational waves.[15] He is a founding member of the Indian Initiative in Gravitational-wave Observations (IndIGO) consortium and has been a former spokesperson.[16] He is one of the lead authors of the proposal for LIGO-India, an advanced LIGO detector on Indian soil.[17] He has been the coordinator of the LIGO-India site search and the proposal to set up a Gravitational Wave Data Centre at IUCAA from an Indian perspective.[18]

CMB-Bhārat

He proposed the Indian space-based mission to detect B-mode polarization signatures of primordial gravitational waves, known as CMB-Bhārat or ECHO.[19]

Awards and recognition

Souradeep has won several international and national awards:

  • Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics (2016): Shared as a contributor to the LIGO discovery paper.[20]
  • Gruber Cosmology Prize (2016): Shared with the LIGO discovery team.[21]
  • Princess of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research (2017): Shared with the LIGO Scientific Collaboration.[22]
  • Vikram Sarabhai Research Award (2012).[23]
  • Swarnajayanti Fellowship (2005–06).[24]

He is an elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (2013),[25] the National Academy of Sciences, India (2018),[26] and the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation (2013).[27][28]
