Tarsy T. Poulios (May 13, 1926- December 13, 2010)[1] was the 79th Mayor of Lowell, Massachusetts and a four term city councilor.[2]
Early Life
Tarsy Poulios was born on May 13, 1926, the third child of Greek Immigrants, Thomas and Zoitsa (née Deros) Poulios, in Lowell, Massachusetts.[1] He graduated Lowell High School in 1943 and was a lifelong resident of the Acre. The next year, Poulios joined the United States Army.[3] Poulios participated in the Pacific War. [1]
In 1951, Poulios became a Mail carrier for the Lowell Post Office. He retired in 1984.[1]
City Councilor and Mayor
Poulios ran for the Lowell, Massachusetts for the first time in 1987. He came in third place, earning him a spot on the Council. [2] Popular among his constituents, he went on to finish in first place in 1989 and 1991.[2] Throughout his eight years on the City Council, he worked to improve the living conditions in the city's neighborhoods. [2]
In 1992, Tarsy Poulios was elected by his fellow councilors to be the 79th Mayor of Lowell, Massachusetts.[2]
He retired from the City Council in 1995.[1]
Later Life
In May of 2003, Tarsy and his brothers William, Arthur, and Charles were honored by the City of Lowell with the unveiling of Poulios Square on Mt. Vernon Street in Lowell, Massachusetts for their service to their country and community.[4]
