Tanya Y. Berger-Wolf is a Lithuanian-born computer scientist working in the United States. She is best known as an early creator of and leader in the field of computational ecology.[1] Berger-Wolf is currently a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering; Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology; and Electrical and Computer Engineering at The Ohio State University where she directs the Translational Data Analytics Initiative (TDAI).[2]

Berger-Wolf graduated from Hebrew University, Jerusalem in 1995 with a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Mathematics. In 2002 she completed her PhD in Computer Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign under Edward M. Reingold with a thesis titled Multichannel Communication and Graph Vertex Labeling.[3] She was a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow first at the University of New Mexico (2002-2004) and then at the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (2004-2005). From 2005-2019 she was in the Computer Science department at the University of Illinois, Chicago, before moving to her current position at The Ohio State University in 2020.[4]

Berger-Wolf's work uses machine learning algorithms to monitor the population levels of endangered species by aggregating and organizing disparate photographic information sources.[5] She co-founded and directs WildMe and open-source not-for-profit that crowd sources images to facilitate ecological conservation efforts.[6] She summarized her research for a general audience in a 2021 TED talk titled How your nature photos can help protect wild animals.[7]
