Tanya Sharapova (born 1984 in Moscow) is a Berlin-based artist working with documentary, archive, and art photography. Initially a travel photographer and writer, Sharapova gradually shifted her focus towards documenting the intricate relationships between individuals and society, collective memory, and issues of territorial isolation.
Career
Sharapova began her professional journey as a travel photographer and writer, contributing to renowned publications like National Geographic Russia, Conde Nast Traveler Russia, GQ Travel Russia, Asian Geographic,[1][2] and Lonely Planet. Over time, her storytelling evolved, leading her to explore the depths of documentary and art photography.
"Strangers[3]" project by Tanya Sharapova stands as a testament to the resilience and connection of Berliners during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Spanning 217 days from November 2, 2020, to June 7, 2021, Sharapova embarked on a unique mission: to capture the essence of Berlin by photographing one stranger each day. This initiative was born out of the desire to foster human connection amidst increasing isolation, a response to the growing alienation caused by lockdowns and social distancing. Strangers was featured in various publications, including Sleek,[4][5] It's Nice That,[6][7] Dreck Magazine,[8][9] Yeoja Mag,[10][11] National Geographic Russia, Berlin Loves You,[12][13] and iHeartBerlin[14][15] underscoring its significance as a powerful visual narrative of human connection in the face of adversity.
Since 2023 Tanya Sharapova is a member of Women Photograph.[16]
Awards
Sharapova's talent has been acknowledged through prestigious awards and recognitions, including the VG Bild-Kunst/Kulturwerk Foundation[17][18] Grant and the Belfast Photo Festival.[19] She received the Pandemic Healing Grant in Berlin and was honored at the OpenWalls Arles[20] for her compelling image from "Should.Would.Could" project.
Exhibitions
Sharapova's thought-provoking projects have been displayed in exhibitions globally, including "Entlang der Oder" at Schloss Neuhardenberg[21][22] in Germany "Drängende Gegenwart" at the European Month of Photography Berlin,[23][24] and "East from Where" at Studio Hanniball[25][26] Berlin. Her work, showcased in solo exhibitions and international displays in Hungary and France.
Education
Sharapova's dedication to her craft is evident through her educational pursuits. She studied at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie in Berlin[27] and participated in workshops like the Noor-Nikon Advanced Storytelling Workshop[28][29] in Düsseldorf, and the International Summer Academy for Art und Design Pentiment[30] in Hamburg.
