Tahaffuz Darsgah is Pakistan's first educational institution specifically designed to cater to the transgender community.[1] Located near Jallo Park in Lahore, Punjab, it was established in 2024 as part of a broader initiative to provide inclusive education and vocational training to transgender individuals.[2] It was founded through a partnership between the UK Curriculum and Accreditation Body (UKCAB), a registered charity in England & Wales,[3] and the Punjab Police. Tahaffuz Darsgah is a response to the need for specialized educational facilities that address the unique challenges faced by transgender individuals in Pakistan.
History
Tahaffuz Darsgah was established to address the significant educational disparities faced by transgender individuals in Pakistan. The initiative was led by Zahid Bhatti,[4] founder of the UK Curriculum and Accreditation Body (UKCAB), which has been instrumental in supporting educational and social projects for marginalized communities since its inception in 2006. Collaborating with the Punjab Police, under the leadership of Inspector General (IG) Punjab Usman Anwar,[5] UKCAB played a pivotal role in bringing this project to life.[6] The institution was established within 18 days. The school was inaugurated by Mohsin Naqvi the Chief Minister of Punjab,[7] symbolizing the government's commitment to supporting vulnerable communities. As the first institution of its kind in Pakistan, Tahaffuz Darsgah has won attention for its role in advocating for the rights and education of transgender individuals.[8][9]
Facilities
The school is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities designed to meet the unique needs of transgender students.[1] These facilities include classrooms, vocational training centers, and recreational areas, all aimed at creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment. The institution is committed to providing a safe space where transgender children can pursue their education without fear of discrimination.[10]
Curriculum
The curriculum at Tahaffuz Darsgah is comprehensive, combining formal education with vocational training. The academic program includes standard subjects, while the vocational component focuses on skills development, enabling students to gain practical experience in various trades. This dual approach is designed to prepare students for future employment opportunities and to help them achieve financial independence.
Social impact
Tahaffuz Darsgah is a step forward in Pakistan's efforts to promote the rights and well-being of transgender individuals. By providing access to education and vocational training, the school aims to break down the barriers that have historically marginalized the transgender community.[4] The establishment of Tahaffuz Darsgah is seenTemplate:Whom as a model for future initiatives in Pakistan and beyond, demonstrating the positive impact of inclusive education.
Collaborations
The success of Tahaffuz Darsgah is the result of a collaborative effort between the Punjab Police and the UK Curriculum and Accreditation Body (UKCAB).[11] This partnership has been instrumental in providing the resources and expertise needed to establish the school and ensure its ongoing success.[12] Founded by Zahid Bhatti in 2006, UKCAB has a long history of supporting educational initiatives aimed at improving the lives of marginalized communities. Zahid Bhatti's visit to Pakistan for the inauguration underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing social challenges.[1]
Future prospects
Building on the success of Tahaffuz Darsgah in Jallo, plans are underway to expand the project to other regions of Pakistan. The Islamabad Police has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UKCAB to establish a similar institution in Islamabad.[13] This expansion reflects the growing recognition of the need for dedicated educational facilities for transgender individuals across the country. Tahaffuz Darsgah aims to continue its mission of providing quality education and support to transgender students, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable society.
