Topps Timeless: 1-of-1 Topps 1952 Mickey Mantle NFT Auction is a first of its kind NFT release celebrating Mickey Mantle’s legacy on the Ethereum blockchain. This is the first featured collectible in the Topps Timeless Collection which offers exclusive premium 1-of-1 NFT collectibles minted as an ERC-721 protocol token.[1] The unique NFT unlocks the rare opportunity for the auction winner to have a 30-minute video interview with Mickey Mantle’s sons, Danny and David Mantle. Presented in partnership with Major League Baseball and the Mantle Estate, Topps Timeless brings the first-ever licensed MLB NFT to be auctioned on OpenSea.[2]
Background
The 1952 Mickey Mantle NFT Auction will go live on the OpenSea platform on March 1st at 1 pm EST and will end on March 4th at 1 pm EST.[3] Any bid placed in the last 10 minutes will extend the auction by an additional 10 minutes.[4] A physical version of the Mickey Mantle baseball card featured in the NFT was sold for $5.2 Million in 2021.[5]
Founded in 1938, The Topps Company is part of Fanatics Collectibles, a next-generation physical and digital trading cards company launched in 2021. The company delights consumers with a multi-platform product portfolio that includes physical and digital collectibles, trading cards, trading card games, sticker and album collections, memorabilia and curated experiential events. Properties include Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, UEFA Champions League, Bundesliga, National Hockey League, Formula 1, Star Wars, Garbage Pail Kids, and more.[6]
Sports fans, baseball fans, sports memorabilia collectors, sports card collectors, Yankee fans, baseball history fans, NFT prospects, crypto consumers, fintech audiences, NFT day traders, high profile digital and physical auction bidders are the parties the platform aims at; and they could benefit from this arrangement.[7]
Officially licensed NFT by Major League Baseball and the Mantle Estate, the card’s front and back images are from an actual card in the original 1952 release that was digitally scanned.[8] The rare Mickey Mantle card front and back were then pulled from Topps’ digital archives and inserted into the NFT showcase, now being offered as a 1 of 1 digital collectible. The NFT is a recreation of the classic Topps baseball card, complete with video of historical imagery and memorabilia that showcase and celebrate Mickey Mantle’s legacy.
Technology
The user needs to connect their wallet to an opensea.com account. If the bid is placed and the user does not have enough WETH, they will be prompted to convert their ETH to WETH using UNISWAP. Converting ETH to WETH is exchanged on a 1-1 basis, so the user must convert the amount of ETH they would like to place on the auction. At this stage, the user may be prompted to pay a gas or transaction swap fee which makes it important to double-check their transaction in the wallet to locate the amount of WETH they will receive. Thereafter, the user needs to click the “Place Bid” button in order to proceed to the bidding page which should be higher than the current amount to take the lead in the auction. Once the bid has been placed, the user should monitor the latest figure as they might need to increase their bid if overtaken by another individual.[9]

Topps 1952 Mickey Mantle Card will be auctioned on the OpenSea platform starting Tuesday, March 1st at 1 pm EST, running 72 hours to Friday, March 4th at 1pm EST.[10] Topps Timeless Series is a new collection celebrating the company’s most iconic baseball cards through exclusive, premium 1-of-1 NFT collectibles.[11]
