TJ Young is an American playwright, dramaturg, and educator. He is an Associate Professor of Dramaturgy in the School of Drama at Carnegie Mellon University.[1] He is best known for works such as The Inseparables, a contemporary adaptation of The Three Musketeers.[2]
Early life and education
Young was born in Texas, United States.[3] He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a Master of Fine Arts in Dramatic Writing from Texas State University.[3]
Academic and professional career
In 2021, Young joined the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama as an Associate Professor of Dramaturgy.[1] He teaches courses in new play development and dramaturgy, and serves as co-chair of the Awards Ceremony for the School of Drama, co-representative for the Pittsburgh region of the Dramatists Guild, and Region 2 chair of the National Playwriting Program for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF).[4]
Playwriting and dramaturgy
Young’s plays have been produced and commissioned across the United States.[1] His work frequently explores identity, race, and community through dramatic and comedic storytelling.

- The Inseparables – a comedic adaptation of The Three Musketeers produced by Carnegie Mellon University (2025)[5] and the University of Pittsburgh (2024).[6]
- No. 6 – winner of the 2017 Harold and Mimi Steinberg Award (KCACTF), published by Concord Theatricals.[7]
- Lyon’s Den – recipient of a Distinguished Achievement in Playwriting Award in 2018.[1]
- WE FLY – performed in regional theatre and festival settings.[8]
- Sperm Donor Wanted (or The Unnamed Baby Play) – finalist for the 2023 L. Arnold Weissberger New Play Award.[9]
