TJ Nelligan (born February 14, 1960) is the former Chairman & CEO of the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games,[1] and the author of "Live Like Sean: Important Life Lessons from My Special-Needs Son" (ISBN 9781626347571) about how his now-deceased son, Sean, changed his life and the lives around him despite severe disabilities.[2] The publication gained national attention when Nelligan revealed that his life was focused on the wrong things before his son taught him to be kind and thoughtful to others.[3]
Background
Nelligan was born in Teaneck, New Jersey gained sales and marketing experience with Procter & Gamble and spent seven years on Wall Street. He then spent nine years at Host Communications, Inc., president of Host’s Sports Division, and a member of Host’s Senior Management Committee.[4] Nelligan then founded Nelligan Sports Marketing, Inc. (NSM) in June 1999. [5] He was credited in the industry with over $500 million in sponsorship agreements with some of America's best-known, blue-chip companies. Nelligan sold the company to Learfield Sports in February 2014.[6]
Nelligan then served as Commissioner of the Commission of Higher Education for the State of New Jersey from 2005 to 2008.[7] He was elected by his peers for the Man of the Year Award by SONJ in April 2007. Montville Township High School inducted Nelligan into its Hall of Fame in 2004. Nelligan was named Montville Township Citizen of the Year in 2006 for his work with the special-needs population and organizations.[8]
Special Needs Advocacy
Nelligan was largely credited with spearheading and leading the effort to bring the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games to New Jersey. He was appointed Chairman and CEO of the 2014 USA Games, where he oversaw the event, including sponsorships, sports operations, logistics, marketing, and public relations.[9] Nelligan has been involved with Special Olympics New Jersey (SONJ) since 1995, serving on SONJ’s Board of Directors from 1995 to 2014, and as Chairman of the Board from 2001 to 2003. He is credited with fundraising millions of dollars for the Special Olympics New Jersey Sports Complex. Nelligan has also served on the board for special-needs school P.G. Chambers School.[10]
Personal Life
Nelligan is a graduate of the University of Richmond with a BA in economics and resides in Hoboken, NJ.
