Tóni Dezső (also spelled Toni Dezso and sometimes credited as Antal Dezso) is a Hungarian baritone and alto saxophonist, improviser, and producer. Active in avant-garde, folk-jazz, jazz-punk, and experimental music, he is recognized for his distinctive improvisational style and long-standing collaborations across Europe and the United States.
Biography
Tóni Dezső was born in 1967 in Novi Sad, then part of Yugoslavia (now Serbia). Largely self-taught, he developed his approach to the saxophone through immersion in diverse cultural and musical traditions.
For over two decades, he was a member of Tudósok, a Hungarian avant-garde jazz-punk ensemble.[1] With the group, he toured extensively throughout Europe and the Balkans, performing in cities such as Berlin, Ljubljana, and Belgrade, and at venues in New York including The Knitting Factory, Anthology Film Archives, and Millennium. He also performed at Hungary’s Sziget Festival on multiple occasions.[2]
In 2016, Dezső co-founded Pearly Clouds alongside guitarist Gary Lucas (known for work with Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley, and Gods and Monsters) and Hungarian singer Enikő Szabó. Their self-titled debut album, recorded in Budapest and released by Acrobat Music (UK) and Fonó Music Hall (Hungary/Europe), was praised by All About Jazz for its originality and blend of Hungarian folk and jazz influences.[3] Gapplegate Guitar Blog praised Dezső’s “melodic primality,”[4] Jazz Weekly highlighted his “earthy textures,”[5] and Hungarian site E-Kultúra described the project as “truly unique.”[6]
He has also performed with deBort, an experimental post-rock and drone-jazz collective that appeared at Budapest venues such as Jazz Club and A38 Ship, as well as at the Hamlet Theatre in Riga.[7][8] With Lucas, Dezső released the duo album Gary and Tóni Go Nutz via Rare Lumiere NY.[9]
Dezső has collaborated with the **Firchie Drums TM1 Snare Drum Library**, a sample pack pioneered by Ivan Fece Firchie, drummer of Serbian bands Ekaterina Velika and Luna.[10]
He also worked as a producer on music videos for Enikő Szabó and collaborated with Waszlavik Gazember László, including creating and performing the music for the Veszprémi Petőfi Theatre production VOLTEMBER, a play about Nikola Tesla directed by Loon Tóth and written by Attila Balázs.[11]
