Dr. Syed Ali Hurr Mujtaba Kamoonpuri is a Twelver Shia Islamic scholar from Al-Mahdi Institute, and is considered the founder of the Islaah movement (Arabic: الإصلاحية, romanized: al-ʾIṣlāḥiyyah), which has been widely characterized by Twelver scholars, such as those of the Al-Qazwini family,[1] to be a Salafi movement analogue in Shi'ism.[2] He is currently a Professor of the Arabic language and Doctor of Shia Theology at Aligarh Muslim University.[3][4]

Biography

Early life

Kamoonpuri was born 1981 in Mbabane, Swaziland, to a Khoja Twelver Shi'a family of islamic scholars, from a sayyid lineage. His father is Maulana Dr. Sayyid Qasim Kamoonpuri, Head of the department of Shi'a theology at Aligarh.[5] His family moved to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania at age 12, for him to attend Al Muntazir School, passing his O levels (IGCSE) and A levels (Cambridge) exams with distinctions.[6]

He pursued further studies at Aligarh Muslim University in India, where he graduated with a Master's degree, and eventually attained his Phd in Arabic studies.

Career

After finishing his studies, he went on to become a lecturer across various islamic centers in the United States, the United Kingdom, East Africa and South Asia,[7] where he shared the stage with figures like Ammar Nakshawani and Mahdi al-Modarresi, and become known for talks which contrasted issues he perceived in Shi'ism with critiques raised by Sunni scholars.

Inspired by the lectures of Kamal al-Haydari, he went on to found al-Islaah in 2021, a platform focused on 'seeking to revive the Belief and Practice of the early Muslim community of Medina, the Prophet, his Ahlul Bayt, and his pious companions,' which was widely criticized by both usuli and akhbari scholars,[8] many of which accused him of following the non-denominational school of Ayatollah Abulfadl Burqai,[9] whom many Twelvers dislike for his attempts at reconciliations with Sunnism:

Kamoonpuri responded by publishing a lecture "strongmanning" the Usuli position.[10]

Most recently, he was renounced by Shaykh Hassan Allahyari, who is widely considered the most influential akhbari scholar in the anglophone world, during a call-in show, in which he commented on Kamoonpuri: "He is totally a Wahhabi."[11]
