In 1951, during his youth, he came into contact with the Bengaluru branch of the Ramakrishna Math. Swami Gautamananda received mantra diksha (spiritual initiation) from Swami Yatiswarananda in 1955.[2]

Monastic Life

He embraced monastic life in 1956, joining the New Delhi branch of the Ramakrishna Mission, where he spent six years before taking his Brahmacharya vows in 1962 and Sannyasa ordination in 1966.

From 1964, Swami Gautamananda served approximately 12 years at the Ramakrishna Mission's centers in Sohra (Cherrapunjee) and Mumbai. In 1976, he became head of the Mission's Aalo center in Arunachal Pradesh, dedicating 13 years towards advancing the education of tribal children in that remote area.

Swami Gautamananda became a Trustee of the Ramakrishna Math and a Member of the Governing Body of the Ramakrishna Mission in March 1990. He briefly headed the Raipur and Narainpur centers in Chhattisgarh and served as the secretary of the Saradapitha center in Belur from 1992 to 1995. Subsequently, he led the Ramakrishna Math in Chennai for almost three decades, significantly expanding its activities and influence. He was elected Vice-President of the Ramakrishna Order in 2017. He became the President of the Ramakrishna Order in 2024.[3]

Visit to Darjeeling

Swami Gautamananda made his inaugural visit to Darjeeling. He arrived at Darjeeling on 7 May 2024, and stayed at Ramakrishna Mission Nivedita Educational and Cultural Centre, a branch centre of Ramakrishna Mission. He expressed satisfaction with the region's significant development and increased societal awareness over the past six decades. During his visit, he attended the Sister Nivedita Memorial at the Darjeeling crematorium. Accompanied by other monks, Swami Gautamananda offered floral tributes and prayers, while a large gathering, including members of the Sister Nivedita Gram welfare associations, paid their respects.[4]
