Biography

Susan Gold learned early in life that community was extremely important, starting many youth groups and involving herself in politics. Susan started volunteering at the 43rd Ward in 1987 and she continues to work in GOTV actives wherever she lives.

Susan graduated from the University of Tampa with a BA in Communications in 1996. Susan is an alumnus of the Visual Studies Workshop where she studied under famed photographer Nathan Lyons. After completing her MFA in 1999 she took her first job as a digital arts professor at Sierra Nevada College where she created an early game education program in 2002.

Susan resuscitated the https://igda.org/sigs/game-education/ IGDA Education Special Interest Group[2] in 2006 growing the organization to over 1K members. Gold was mentored by Randy Pausch and she kept a tight advisory board with Eric Zimmerman, Robin Hunicke, Katherine Isbister, Warren Spector and Mark DeLoura. In 2008 the Special Interest Group collaboratively came up with the IGDA Game Education Framework[3] that has been used to create hundreds of university degrees all over the world. It still serves as an outline for how to approach collaborative cross genre education.

Career

As a frequent conference speaker, Susan found herself at the Gotland Game Awards and met Gorm Lai. She shared her idea of having an event that was experienced simultaneously around the world, where the excitement of game-making could be a fun event shared around the planet in one weekend. This was the birth of the Global Game Jam. Susan served as the face of GGJ from 2008-2020.

In 2008, the first occurrence of the event happening January 30, February 1st of 2009, later in 2017 was part of the creation of the https://ggjnext.org/ GGJ Next, focused on a younger audience.
