Sun Junkies is a Canadian indie rock band from Brantford, Ontario. The band consists of Noah Carmichael (lead vocals), Issa Mohammad (bass), Nick Stacy (drums, percussion), and Ethan Silver (guitar).[1] The band was started in 2016 by Carmichael as a high school senior, eventually forming the current lineup in 2018.[2]

History

Carmichael developed the idea for Sun Junkies as a senior in high school in 2016, playing with anyone available until securing Stacy on drums. Mohammad had recently moved back to Brantford after living out of town, who then introduced the others to Silver to form their current consistent lineup.[3]

Sun Junkies released their first singles I'm Only Stupid Cuz My Parents Gave Me Pills and 519 (Reprise) in 2018, then releasing Sometimes and MDMA in 2019 which would be included in their debut album Technicolor Daydream of the same year. The band would go dark with new music up until the release of their EP Unconventional Methods of Transportation, two years later in 2021.[4]

Since the release of Transportation, Sun Junkies have released multiple singles and are planning a 2023 release of a currently untitled second album.

Side Projects

Members Issa Mohammad and Noah Carmichael co-founded the not-for-profit record label Bummer Records in 2020 as a means of providing local artists a platform to get their music published and heard by wider audiences. Originally intended just a means to distribute music, in 2022 they began hosting shows at local Brantford dive bar Two Doors Down. Many locals and fans consider Bummer and their shows as a spiritual successor to The Ford Plant[5], another local venue and record label which closed it's doors in 2013.[6]

Bummer also hosts the annual music festival GNARFest, starting in 2022 and expected to reoccur in November of 2023. The festival has hosted over 20 artists, with shows occurring at Two Doors Down and a local skate park at Brant's Crossing Park.[7] Notable bands include Pkew pkew pkew, Single Mothers, Status/Non-Status, Weekend Goodbye, Sun Junkies, Strawberry Cough, among others.[8]

Several members of Sun Junkies preform in other bands, such as Nick Stacy occasionally preforming with fellow Brantford band Miss Mae.
