Sulaiman Jenkins is an academic scholar in the field of applied linguistics. He has been teaching in Saudi Arabia since 2004 and has published a number of articles related to academic plagiarism, discrimination, and native-speakerism[1] (most notably with Oxford University Press). He is also a close friend of Napoleon (rapper)|Mutah Beale, a former rapper (Napoleon) with the Outlawz. Sulaiman recently authored the biographical memoir Life is Raw: The Story of a Reformed Outlaw[2], which details the tumultuous life of Mutah and serves as a cultural and historical relic for hip hop. The style of the book, which he has discussed at length[3], has garnered early acclaim, and as such, an autographed copy of the book has already been accepted as an exhibit at the Universal Hip Hop Museum[4], which is located in the Bronx and set to open its doors in 2023[5].
Early life and education
Sulaiman was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 1, 1981 in Crown Heights. From a young age, he showed academic promise and attended the Philippa Schuyler School for the Gifted and Talented. From there, he was fortunate to be accepted into New York's Prep for Prep program, a nonprofit organization that prepares exceptional minority students for matriculation at America's leading boarding schools. He ultimately attended high school at St. Andrew's School (Delaware)|St. Andrew's School in Middletown, DE (graduated 1999) before going to Amherst College in Amherst, MA (graduated 2003), and New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Steinhardt School of Education (graduated 2004), where he earned a Master's Degree in Teaching English as a second or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. He has recently been recognized as one of Prep for Prep's notable alumni in Arts & Writing[6]. He is currently pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Exeter.
Activism and hobbies
Sulaiman is a firm advocate of social justice in the field of English language teaching and has published a number of articles, given workshops and presentations, and has been a guest on numerous podcasts[7] to discuss racism and discrimination, particularly with the issue of native-speakerism. In his free time, he loves to read and play basketball, pursuing his passion beyond high school, where he was a standout basketball player[8][9][10].
