Suhrab Sirat is an award winning poet, writer and journalist who works for the BBC World Service.[1] Born in 1990 in the Balkh Province of Afghanistan, Suhrab fled Afghanistan in 2013 after receiving death threats from extremist groups, eventually gaining political asylum in the UK in 2014.[2] His journey is the basis and source of inspiration for his chapbook “The Eighth Crossing.”[3] Suhrab obtained a bachelor’s degree in Persian Language and Literature from Balkh University and later a master's degree in International Politics and Human Rights from City, University of London.[2]

Aged 19, Suhrab’s first collection of poems in Persian, Jealous Thorns, was published By Balkh Independent Writers Association.[4] His second and third books were published by Afghan PEN, a member of International PEN.[4] His poems and literature commentaries have also been widely published in literary magazines, publications and websites across Persian speaking countries.[2] Suhrab represented Afghanistan at the Rio International Literary Festival (FLUPP) in 2013 and has also written lyrics for several well-known Afghan singers including the first Afghan female rapper, Soosan Firooz; lyrics include subjects on forced migration, patriarchy, religious extremism and women’s rights.[4][5] In his journalism career, Suhrab mainly focuses on art, literature and refugee topics.[6][7][8]
