Sugata Srinivasaraju is an Indian bilingual journalist, editor, author, translator, and columnist who has editorially led print, television, and digital newsrooms.[1] He is known for his insightful commentary on Indian politics, society, and culture.[2]
Education
Srinivasaraju holds a postgraduate degree in English literature from the Central University of Hyderabad, where he was also a research scholar in comparative literature.
Career
Journalism
Srinivasaraju began his journalism career with the Deccan Herald. Throughout his career, he has held several editorial roles, including Editor-in-Chief of two major Kannada dailies—Vijaya Karnataka and Kannada Prabha—both owned by the Times Group.[3] He has also served as the Editorial Director and Editor-in-Chief of the Asianet News Network, where he managed two television channels and a newspaper in South India.[4]
Srinivasaraju was a senior editor at Outlook newsmagazine and Hindustan Times.[5] He Srinivasaraju is also the co-founder of FirstPerson Media Ventures Limited, which ran digital news sites The State and SouthWord. He has also contributed to renowned publications such as The Irish Times, The Caravan, Mumbai Mirror, The New Indian Express, Mint, The Wire, and The Economic Times.[6]
Academic and other roles
Srinivasaraju has been an adjunct professor at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Mangalore University since 2015. He was also a founding faculty member of the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media in Bangalore.[7][8]
In addition, Srinivasaraju is a member of the Editors Guild of India, a Fellow of the Kamalnayan Bajaj Fellowship, a former Fellow of the Aspen Institute, USA, and a former Chevening Scholar in the UK.[9]
Literary contributions
Srinivasaraju has authored, translated, and edited several books in English and Kannada. His writing often explores themes of language, culture, and politics, offering a deep and personal look into India’s regional and national dynamics.[10]
He has written three books: Keeping Faith with the Mother Tongue: The Anxieties of a Local Culture, Pickles from Home: The Worlds of Bilingual, and Kittale Nerale Perale: Avasarakke Etukida Maatu Baraha. He has also written a biography of former Prime Minister H. D. Devegowda, “Furrows in a Field: The Unexplored Life of H.D. Deve Gowda,” which received acclaim.[11]
In 2023, Srinivasaraju published "Strange Burdens: The Politics and Predicaments of Rahul Gandhi." This book explores the political life of Rahul Gandhi, analyzing his challenges and the broader implications for the Congress party amidst India's evolving political landscape.[12]

- In 2000, he received the British Chevening Scholarship for excellence in print journalism.
- His book Phoenix and Four Other Mime Plays won him the translation prize from the Karnataka Academy of Letters in 2005.

Srinivasaraju resides in Bengaluru with his wife and two children.
