Sue Hodder is an Australian winemaker and the current Chief Winemaker of Wynns Coonawarra Estate. She entered the wine industry in 1993 and has since become one of Australia's most acclaimed winemakers, winning Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year in 2010.[1] She was named Fellow of the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology 2021 in recognition of her contributions to Australian wine.[1]
Career
Hodder began her career as a Viticulture Technical Offer for Penfolds where she focused on the cultivation Shiraz grapes.[2] She also spent time working in Bordeaux, Margaret River and California.[3]
She moved to Coonawarra to begin working at Wynns in 1993 where she worked under Peter Douglas.[4] She was appointed Chief Winemaker in 1998.[4]
As Chief Winemaker, she worked closely with viticulturist Allen Jenkins to survey the estate's soils, which are predominantly the terra rossa red-limestone for which the region is famous.[5]
Hodder is currently a member of the Limestone Coast Grape and Wine Council and was previously the President of the Coonawarra Vignerons.[6]
Early Life and Education
Hodder was born in Alice Springs in Australia's Northern Territory. She studied viticulture at Roseworthy Agricultural College in northern Adelaide.[5]
