Storm

Study Association Storm is the study association (Dutch: studievereniging) of the bachelor Global Sustainability Science and the master's programmes Sustainable Development and Water Science and Management on the Utrecht University in Utrecht, The Netherlands. It's part of the Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University.

The association operates from their association room, also known as the Storm Room, in the Buys Ballot Building on the Uithof.

Goal

As a study association, Storm organises three different kinds of activities: social, educational, and career-related. Next to that, Storm strives to be as sustainable as possible, by being vegetarian (with vegan options), not flying, and trying to reduce their carbon footprint as much as possible. Storm is also an international organisation with students coming from all over the world.

History

In 1991 a group of students from environmental sciences ("milieukunde") at Utrecht University wanted to have their own study association. At the time they were part of study association V.U.G.S (Vereniging van Utrechtse Geografie Studenten [1]), from social geography and planning. After a series of meetings, on the 12th of December 1991 the first General Meeting of Storm took place. Rick Hoeksema, who was interim chairman at the time, charged Detlef van Vuuren as the first Chairman of Storm. On Febuary 5th two important decisions were made: the committee of environmental sciences would be called Storm (STudenten ORganisatie Milieuwetenschappen), and the founding date is December 12, 1991 [2].

The Association

Since its establishment, Storm has gone through many changes. The number of committees has grown to 17 and 4 working groups [3]. The shift to the new bachelor programme Global Sustainability Science in 2016-2017 has caused Storm to become an international association, and changed the main language to English.

Storm is managed by its Board, consisting of six student members.

The current Patron of Storm is Klaas van Egmond, a professor emeritus of Sustainability and Environment at Utrecht University. Previously, he was the director of the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.

Sister Associations

Storm has four sister associations in the Netherlands:

  • Aktief Slip [4] (Milieuwetenschap, Wageningen)
  • Mundus [5] (Geografie, Planologie, en Milieumaatschappij, Nijmegen)
  • Pyrus [6] (Bodem, water en atmosfeer, Wageningen)
  • SV Spectrum [7] (Future Planet Studies, Amsterdam)
