History

2022–2024: Formation

Street Legal was formed following the COVID-19 lockdowns, with Hayward seeking a new creative outlet. After solidifying its lineup, the band debuted live at the Grace Emily Hotel in May 2022. Within a year, they became active on the Australian live circuit, performing alongside national and international acts including Sparta, The Living End, Ash and Regurgitator. They also appeared at major festivals such as Adelaide Fringe, Beer & BBQ Fest, and the Tour Down Under.[2][3]

In March 2023 the band released their debut single "Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow". The song was featured online by music critic and internet personality Anthony Fantano.

In October 2023 the band released "Modern Ruins", reached No. 3 on the AMRAP Metro Charts in October 2023. The music video for this song was a featured 'Wild One' broadcast on ABC TV's Rage.[4]

2025: Bruxism

In 2025, Street Legal released their debut extended play, Bruxism. The record was mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Hugo Nicolson and Adelaide engineer Matt Schultz. The EP explores themes of anxiety, populism, and insomnia, blending driving rhythms with dark synth textures.[5]

The lead single, "No Gods! No Masters! No Doorlists! No Bouncers!" received coverage in Rolling Stone Australia, The Music, CityMag, and Triple J Unearthed.[6][7][8] The band was nominated three times for People’s Choice Best Rock Act at the South Australian Music Awards.
