Stoyan Dimitrov Gadjev or alternative spelling Gadzhev (December 29, 1940 - August 19, 2017) was a Bulgarian veterinarian, scientist and university lecturer in veterinary anatomy.

Early life and education

Assoc. prof. Stoyan Gadjev (Gadzhev), PhD was born in the village of Krushevo, Blagoevgrad Province, Nevrokop region on December 29, 1940. He attended II mixed-sex high school in the town of Gotse Delchev, Blagoevgrad Province. He completed the two year compulsory military service as a topographer near the town of Vratsa. In 1965 he received his degree in veterinary medicine from the prof. dr. G. Pavlov Higher Veterinary Medical Institute in the city of Sofia.[1]

Career

Assoc. prof. Stoyan Gadjev (Gadzhev), PhD had 42 years of experience as a renowned veterinarian and lecturer of veterinary anatomy. He worked five years as the chief veterinarian of the Labor Cooperative Agricultural Farm in the village of Tatari, Belene municipality, Pleven district and later on in the Varietal Seeds State enterprise, village of Sarnitza, Pazardzhik district. He also worked as the Head of State Veterinary Sanitary Control in Batak, Bulgaria until 1974.[1]

He was elected to the position of an assistant professor in the Department of Animal Anatomy at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM) of the newly established Higher Institute of Zootechnics and Veterinary Medicine (VIZVM) in the city of Stara Zagora after successfully passing a competitive examination in 1974. He became a senior assistant professor in 1977 and chief assistant professor in the same department in 1979.

He successfully defended his dissertation on Morphological investigations on arterial and venous blood vessels and their formations in the head and brain of sheep in 1986 and obtained the degree of Candidate of Veterinary Sciences in 1986 as well as the scientific title of Associate Professor in 1988.

In 1995 the Trakia University in the city of Stara Zagora was established and he was a member of the Scientific Council at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine from 1995 till 1999. He was the head of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy, Histology and Embryology from 1997 till 2000 and for several months until 2004. He retired in 2005.

He became a member of the Bulgarian Agrarian Union in 1970. In 1998 the Commission set up by the Access to the Documents of the Former States Security Services Act certified that the former State Security Services had not collected data on him.

In 2015 he was awarded the Golden Diploma by the management of the Veterinary Faculty of Trakia University which is awarded to “distinguished veterinarians who graduated 50 years ago and have significantly contributed to the development and prosperity of the veterinary profession”.[2]

Assoc. prof. Stoyan Gadjev (Gadzhev), PhD died in the town of Velingrad on August, 19, 2017.

Scientific achievements

Assoc. prof. Stoyan Gadjev (Gadzhev), PhD published 4 scientific books and 1 popular science book about Donkey as a single author, more than 51 scientific (most of the articles have summaries in English and Russian) and 41 popular science articles in Bulgarian and international journals and newspapers, etc.[3][4]

His self-published scientific books on Applied and Topographic Anatomy of Domestic Animals and Birds, Systemic Anatomy of Domestic Animals (Volumes I and II) and Anatomy of Domestic Birds are the only books of veterinary anatomy for universities in Bulgaria for many years at the international level, with bibliography, modern veterinary anatomical nomenclature and emphasis being placed on the applied nature of the anatomical data.

He is the single author of the popular science book All about the Donkey, published in 1997. It is the only popular science book about Donkey in Bulgaria.

He was also the co-author of Diseases of the cat (1999) and two handbooks for exercises in Systemic (1992) and Topographic (1993) anatomy of domestic animals.

The title of his dissertation for obtaining the degree of candidate of veterinary medicine at the Higher Institute of Zootechnics and Veterinary Medicine (VIZVM), Stara Zagora, Sofia was Morphological investigations on arterial and venous blood vessels and their formations in the head and brain of sheep. Arteries and their formations in the head and brain of newborn, adolescent and adult sheep were thoroughly studied. For the first time, some previously undescribed arteries and veins, venous networks and plexuses in the masticatory muscles, pharynx, orbit, nasal and oral cavity had been identified. The course and obliteration of the internal carotid artery were monitored. Some peculiarities in the structure of the occipital-vertebral anastomosis, the sinus system and the arteries and veins of the brain had been established. Studies had also been performed on the histostructure of large vessels and vascular plexuses and the arterial networks.[4]

In addition to addressing various problems in the field of blood supply to various organs in different species of domestic animals, his scientific works paid attention to other systems in the body. He also developed methods for the preparation of dry anatomical preparations from various organs to illustrate the learning process and a method for taking blood from poultry.

His books and scientific articles are cited in Bulgarian and international scientific papers and referenced in international databases with scientific information such as Scopus, MEDLINE / PubMed, Google Scholar, FAO AGRIS, CAB Direct, etc. long before this system for monitoring and evaluation of research was introduced in Bulgaria.

He was a member of the Bulgarian Anatomical Society and the German Anatomischen Gesellschaft from 1981 till 1995. He maintained scientific contacts with prominent scientists from Western European countries although he was never allowed to travel abroad. He participated with scientific reports in a number of congresses, symposia, scientific sessions, incl. with international participation – Varna (1978, 1992), Golden Sands (1981), Pleven (1985, 1999), Sofia (1985), Albena (1987), Plovdiv (1987), Kostinbrod (1988), Stara Zagora (1982, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1996), etc.
