Stewart Hett (born Keir Stewart Hett; 20 September 1926 – 9 October 2019)[1] was a British Royal Navy lieutenant and navigator who was aboard the HMS Amethyst during the Yangtsze Incident in China in the summer of 1949.[2]
Personal life
Hett was born on 20 September 1926 in East Grinstead, Sussex to Arnold and Laura Hett (née Stewart Sandeman).[3] His parents married on 20 Aug 1923 in the Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields in London.[4]
HMS Amethyst and the Yangtze ordeal
At the time of the Yangtze incident, Hett was 22 and had the rank of lieutenant.[5][6] Hett was appointed the title of "cat officer" and was in charge of the mail and gifts that was sent to Simon, the ship's cat who boosted morale aboard the ship during the ordeal.[7][8][9]
Death
Hett died 9 October 2019 aged 93 peacefully at home surrounded by family.[1]
