Steven Schneider (born January 25, 1974.[1]) is an American producer best known for the success of Paranormal Activity[2] (2007), which grossed over $193 million at the global box office on a $15,000 production budget and became the first installment of a multimillion dollar franchise that has made over $400 million to date[3].
Schneider is also well known for the Insidious franchise (2011–present), the successful thrillers Split (2016), Glass (2019), and Knock at the Cabin (2023), as well as notable horror films Blair Witch (2016) and Pet Sematary (2019)[2]. His projects have grossed a combined $2.5 billion to date at the global box office[4]. He is currently partnering with Malkier and Sinister Studios on an upcoming slate including a range of IP-driven horror, animation, and thriller projects[5].
Schneider moved to Los Angeles to commence his career in the late 2000’s[6], making his debut with the 2009 release of Paranormal Activity, followed by the subsequent box office successes of Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Insidious (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), and the The Devil Inside (2012)[2].
Early life and education
Steven Jay Schneider was born on January 25, 1974, in New York City[1]. He attended Hunter High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and English from the University of California at Berkeley[6].
Schneider went on to further his education earning a Master of Arts in Philosophy at the University of London with a focus on the philosophy of psychoanalysis and a study of the relationship between Descartes' Meditations and Saint Ignatius Loyola's Spiritual Exercises[6]. His interest in the philosophy of film led him to seek dual PhDs at Harvard University and at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts[6].
Schneider attributes a love for reading, in both his personal and professional life, as a major aspect that contributed to his overall development, creativity, and success[6].
Career
Academia & Film Criticism
Passionate about cinema, literature, philosophy, and psychoanalysis, Schneider spent the majority of his twenties focused on a career in academia and film criticism, having studied and developed research in the likes of University of California at Berkeley, University of London, Harvard University, and NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.[6]
Book Publishing
A published author specialized in the horror genre and film psychoanalysis, Schneider has written and published over twenty books about the history of cinema, the horror genre, Hollywood stars, directors, and film psychoanalysis and philosophy. Notable titles include Fear Without Frontiers: Horror Cinema Across the Globe, Horror Film and Psychoanalysis: Freud's Worst Nightmare (Cambridge Studies in Film), and Dark Thoughts: Philosophic Reflections on Cinematic Horror'.
Early Producing
In the late 2000’s, Schneider moved from New York to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the entertainment industry[6].
