Steven Roberts (born April 11, 1952) is an entrepreneur, attorney, and former politician from Missouri.[1] He served on the St. Louis Board of Aldermen from 1979 through 1993 and represented Ward 20 during the 1990-1991 legislative session.[2][3][4] Roberts and his older brother, Michael Victor Roberts, founded multiple companies throughout the 1980s, including Roberts Broadcasting, the Roberts Brothers Properties, and the Roberts Construction Company.[1][5]
Early Life and Education
Steven Craig Roberts was born to Delores Talley Roberts and Victor Roberts on April 11, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri. He is the second of four siblings and grew up in the Penrose neighborhood. He attended schools in the St. Louis Public School System.[1][6] Roberts earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Sociology from Clark University in Worchester, Massachusetts, in 1974. He graduated with a Juris Doctorate and a Masters of Law/LLM from Washington University in St. Louis in 1977 and 1978.[2][7]
Political Career
From 1979 to 1993, Roberts served as an alderman in St. Louis. He sponsored the St. Louis Center, Union Station, Cervantes Convention Center expansion, and Busch Stadium developments.[1][8] In 2017, Roberts became the first African-American Chief of Staff to the St. Louis Sheriff's Department.[9]
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi appointed Roberts to the Board of Directors for the Congressional Award in April of 2017. He also served on several other boards, including those of the Directors of Missouri Municipal League, The National League of Cities, and General Counsel of the National Black Caucus of Locally Elected Officials National Policy Alliance[10][2][11] He is a lifetime member of the American Council of Young Political Leaders.[2]
Entrepreneurial Career
The Roberts Brothers founded Roberts Broadcasting in 1981, Roberts Brothers Properties in 1982, and Roberts Construction Company in 1989.[12] In 2007, Roberts was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year.[2] Roberts joined the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters, Inc in 2015, alongside Jerry Lopes, DuJuan McCoy, and Melody Spann-Cooper.[13]
