Steve Hanson is a Canadian basketball coach who served as head coach of the Simon Fraser University men's basketball program from 2016 to 2025.

Early life and education

Hanson was born in Peterborough, Ontario, on August 23, 1974. He earned a Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching from Douglas College in 2011, followed by a Bachelor of Education from Simon Fraser University in 2013.[1]

Coaching career

High school

Hanson began coaching at Terry Fox Secondary in Port Coquitlam in the mid-1990s and returned as head coach from 2005 to 2015. The team won the B.C. AAA provincial championship in 2012.[2] He also worked with Canada Basketball Centre for Performance (BC) and 3D Basketball Academy.

Simon Fraser University

Hanson joined Simon Fraser as an assistant coach in 2015 and was appointed head coach on May 26, 2016.[3][4]

In 2018–19, SFU posted a 15–14 record, its first winning season since joining the NCAA.[5] The following season the team went 16–13 and was ranked fifth in the NCAA West Region.

In February 2024, SFU defeated fourth-ranked Saint Martin's University.[6]

SFU announced a change in program leadership on March 5, 2025, ending Hanson's tenure as head coach.[7]

Certifications

Hanson holds a Canada Basketball Level III NCCP coaching certification.[8]

Personal life

Hanson is married to Mary-Anne, and they have one son, Adryan.[9]
