Stephen David Maddock OBE was born 18 September 1968 in Lichfield, Staffs. He was educated at Durrington High School, Worthing Sixth Form College and New College, Oxford[1], where he read Politics, Philosophy and Economics and was chair of the chamber choir Schola Cantorum of Oxford.
He joined BBC Radio 3 in 1990 as a Production Assistant. In March 1993 he moved across to the BBC Proms, initially as Planning Assistant and then (from 1995) as Administrator.[2]
He played a central role in the establishment of Shireland CBSO Academy, the first UK school to be established in partnership with a major orchestra.[3]
In November 2022 it was announced that he had been appointed as the next Principal of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire[4], a role he took up up in May 2023.[5]
In July 2023, the Birmingham and Midland Institute awarded Maddock their inaugural President's Medal.[6]
