In the field of statistics, a statistician is someone who works with either theoretical or practical statistics. The profession may be found in both the private and public sectors of the economy. Combine statistical knowledge with other topic areas is widespread, and statisticians may work as employees or as statistical consultants in a variety of industries and settings.

Approximately 26,970 occupations were categorised as statisticians in the United States, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of the year 2014. Approximately 30% of those surveyed were employed by government organisations (federal, state, or local). Statistics professionals in the United States earned an average of $80,500 per year as of May 2016. A significant number of people who use statistics and data analysis in their work but who hold positions other than statistician, such as actuaries, applied mathematicians, economists, data scientists, data analysts (predictive analytics), financial analysts, psychometricians, sociologists, epidemiologists, and quantitative psychologists are also among the statistics and data analysis users. The professions of statisticians are covered in a number of national and international occupational categories. According to the Bureau of Labor And statistics, "From 2016 to 2026, the total number of people employed is expected to increase by 33 percent, which is much faster than the average for all professions. Businesses will need these employees in order to evaluate the growing amount of digital and electronic data that is being generated."

A master's degree in statistics or a related field, as well as a PhD, are required for most positions in the field in the United States. "Typical work includes collaborating with scientists, providing mathematical modelling and simulations, designing randomised experiments and randomised sampling plans, analysing experimental or survey results, and forecasting future events (such as product sales).
