Starburst Data is an open-source software company headquartered in Boston, MA. Their data lake analytics platform: Starburst Enterprise and Starburst Galaxy is powered by open-source Trino (formerly known as Presto), distributed SQL query engine.[1]
History
In December 2017, Teradata announced that the support and development of Presto will operate under a new company, Starburst Data.[2] The company is founded by database experts: Justin Borgman, Matthew Fuller, and Kamil Bajda-Pawlikowski.
In October 2019, Martin Traverso, Dain Sundstrom, and David Phillips, the original founders of the Presto project at Facebook, joined Starburst.
In November 2019, the company raised $22 Million from Index Ventures. The following year in June 2020, the company raised $42 Million from Coatue and Index Ventures.
In February 2022, Starburst announced a $250 million financing round, nearly tripling its valuation to $3.35 billion and on June 23, 2022, Starburst acquired Varada, a data lake analytics accelerator.[3][4]
The company's CEO, Justin Borgman was recognized in October 2022 by Goldman Sachs as one of the Most Exceptional Entrepreneurs of 2022.[5]
