Stanley Nibbs (7 June 1916 - 16 January 1985) was an instructor and preacher on the island of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. He worked as teacher for the British Virgin Islands first Highschool, whilst also travelling the island as a Methodist preacher.[1] His educational service to the islands was recognized with his awarding of the British Empire Medal in 1968.[2][3]

Biography

Stanley Nibbs was born in Tortola in the British Virgin Islands (B.V.I). on June 7th, 1914. He lived his life there until passing away on January 16, 1985.

For over 50 years, Stanley was the sole woodworking teacher for the British Virgin Islands Secondary School.[4][5]

Honors and Awards

In 1968, he was awarded the British Empire Medal (B.E.M) by Elizabeth II in recognition of his civil service.[6]

In 1993 a stamp was made in his honor for his secondary educational service.[7] This marked the first instance of British Virgin Islands stamps honoring its native citizens.

On October 21, 2014, it was announced the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies (VISTS) would be naming a wing of their school after Stanley Nibbs for his over 50 years of scholarly service to the Virgin Islands.[4]
