SPACE AGENTS: The Mysterious Ax is a 2023 French computer-animated science-fiction movie directed and produced by Dom Fred. Written and co-produced by Alick Macaire [1], the film stars two fictional characters, Lt Fred Doko and Lt Dina Summers, two Alliance super soldiers called Space Agents, attached to the 3rd Alliance operational base. The story takes place in a future alternate reality where mankind discovered an alien power source called gravitonium. It also powers their most important communication system, an IA called C.I.L.I.A.N, acronym for Central Intelligence Link In Advanced Network.

The movie follows captain Piok and his crew onboard the Espérance ship, on his mission to a portal. Overwatched by Vice-Admiral Ava Belushi, in charge of the 3rd Alliance operational Base, the Espérance convoy is attacked by the Saurians. Outnumbered and in mortal peril, they call for help. Lt Dina Summers and Lt Fred Doko are tasked to secure it. But, as soon as they left, the base is also attacked.

Production
The production starts during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown. This situation gave birth to the story. Espérance, the name of the spaceship, is the French word for hope, an allegory where the world situation is heading toward an uncertain future.
The characters' body movements were recorded using motion capture. Previsualization has be done entirely in-house. Lighting and its effect on characters' skin was of particular importance, but the team eventually decided to use Unreal Engine software, the 5.0 version, for the final rendering.
The film's score was composed by Ben Jacquier, also in charge of all the sound design. Kaizad Patel, composer of The Great Escape was the music supervisor.
Approved by the CNC, the movie has its premiere in Paris on September 14, 2023.
