Soviet Zion is a musical drama written for the stage with a score by by Giles Howe and Katy Lipson and Roberto Trippini [1]. This contemporary opera was originally workshopped twice at the Rosemary Branch Theatre in London (dir. Vik Sivalingham), and made its debut at The Jewish Museum London (dir. Bronagh Lagan) with a revised book by Giles Howe and Roberto Trippini which transferred to London's The Lost Theatre (later renamed The Stockwell Playhouse). In 2020, an accompanying symphonic orchestral score was produced with orchestration and arrangements by Brian Freeland and Giles Howe, which debuted in a Concept Album recording released in 2021 with the simultaneous release of a bonus album of selections from the show performed in Yiddish translated by poet Gittel Schwartz - notably in the Hungarian dialect spoken by the Hassidic community in New York, the first Musical Theatre recording of its kind. [2] [3]

The show is set in Birobidzhan, the capital city of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the Russian Far East. The show looks at the lives of an American family and a Ukrainian family who each participate in the movement to create there an autonomous utopia and explores the sacrifices they must make to achieve the freedom they seek in escaping the failed state.

The feature-length Concept Album was well-received by the press, unanimously receiving 4- and 5- star reviews from papers worldwide including The Winnipeg Jewish Post and News [4], The Jerusalem Post [5], Love London Culture [6], Centre Stage [7], The Jerusalem Post [8], The Jewish Telegraph, The Forward [9], Theatre Weekly [10] and from leading industry blogs including Always Time for Theatre, Number9Reviews, West End Best Friend, LondonTheatre, Musical Theatre Review, Musical Theatre Lives In Me, and was featured on Broadway World. [11]

An hour-long special about the making of the show was made for and broadcast on Montreal's Radio Shalom. [12]
