Southwest Minnesota State University

Marshall, Minnesota is home to a public institution of higher education known as Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU). The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System includes it as a member institution. Approximately 8,700 students are now enrolled at this educational institution, which also includes 148 teaching staff members. The College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences and the College of Business, Education, and Professional Studies are the two primary colleges that make up this educational institution.

Southwest Minnesota State College, which would later become the university, was established in 1964. (SMSC). On September 19, 1967, it opened its doors to welcome its first cohort of students. Southwest State University (SSU) was renamed Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) on July 1, 2003. Previously known as Southwest State University (SSU), the college changed its name on August 1, 1975 to become Southwest State University (SSU).

On May 10, 1968, the very first issue of the student newspaper, which was first known as The Impact, was distributed. In 1974, the publication became known as The Reader; in 1980, however, the name was restored back to The Impact. The name of the school newspaper was changed to The Spur in 2003 in order to be more in keeping with the Mustang ethos and to encourage more participation from the student body.
