SMU, often known as Southern Methodist University, is a private research institution located in University Park, Texas. It also has a campus in Taos County, which is located in New Mexico. On April 17, 1911, Southern Methodist University (SMU) was established in conjunction with Dallas municipal leaders by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, which is today a member of the United Methodist Church. Nonetheless, it does not adhere to any particular religious denomination in its teaching and welcomes students of all different faiths. It is categorised as an R-2 university, which stands for "Doctoral Universities With High Research Activity."

The university has 12,373 students as of the fall semester of 2020, including 6,827 undergraduates and 5,546 postgraduates, making it the institution with the highest student population in SMU's entire history. The instructional faculty now numbers 1,151 as of the fall 2019 semester, with 754 of those positions being full-time.

Over 3,827 degrees were awarded by the university during the academic year 2020, including 315 doctorates, 1,659 master's degrees, and 1,853 bachelor's degrees. Additionally, the university offers over 32 doctoral programmes and over 120 master's programmes across eight schools, including the Edwin L.
