Southern Guild
Southern Guild is a contemporary art and design gallery located in Cape Town, South Africa.[1]
History
Founded in 2008 by Trevyn McGowan and Julian McGowan, the gallery represents contemporary African designers and artists including Andile Dyalvane, Porky Hefer, Rich Mnisi and Zizipho Poswa.[2] [3]
Southern Guild opened its first permanent gallery space in Woodstock, Cape Town in 2014, and moved to its current location at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in 2017.[4] It was the first African gallery to be invited to showcase at Design Miami in 2011 and at Christie’s London’s annual design auction in 2015. The gallery collaborated Vitra Design Museum on their “Making Africa” exhibition in 2015. [5] They represented South Africa at the 2016 London Design Biennial with an exhibition by artist Porky Hefer at Somerset House, London. [6] In 2020, the gallery collaborated with the National Gallery of Victoria Triennial on Porky Hefer’s exhibition ‘Plastocene - Marine Mutants from a Disposable World.’[7] and on the exhibition “Beauty: Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial” at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. [8] In 2021 they collaborated with the Friedman Benda gallery in New York on the exhibition ‘iThongo’ (Ancestral Dreamscape) with artist Andile Dyalvane. [9]
The gallery has curated more than 50 exhibitions in South Africa, and been invited to participate in international art fairs including Design Miami, Design Miami/Art Basel, The Salon Art & Design, PAD London, Design Days Dubai, and Collective in New York.[10] [11] [12]
