Sourendro - Soumyojit is an Indian Pianist - Vocalist musician duo consisting of Sourendro Mullick & Soumyojit Das both Indian by birth and likes to consider themselves world citizens at heart. Soumyojit the vocalist has a flair in the experimental music genre which ranges from renditions of short classical pieces, semi-classical pieces, ghazals, thumri, new compositions, popular songs, playback songs. He is trying to develop a new form of singing which incorporates the western values in traditional Indian techniques of voice preparation. Sourendro the pianist has a style of his own and uses the nuances of Indian classical music in the grammar of the instrument. The duo composes, performs, interprets music they believe in, they keep the faith of their connoisseurs, they worship art. They conceptualize, present, curate experimental musical projects.

Early life

Soumyojit was born in Barrackpore, West Bengal, and studied at the Modern School of Barrackpore founded in 1953 by Mrs. Enid Isaac - a British educationist par excellence. He later shifted to Kolkata and got admitted to St. Pauls Mission Sealdah, he completed his college from St.Xaviers College, Kolkata in the department of English. He began his music training at a very early age and was called the little Lata Mangeshkar in school for his intense adulation for the legendary Indian playback artist. He started training by the doyen Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty from 1996. He is still learning widely under the wing of the legend. Soumyojit still idolizes Lata Mangeshkar and adopted a lot of techniques following her music. Sourendro learned piano first from his grandfather, Sri Mrigendro Mullick who was also an acclaimed professional Billiards player winning at many national level tournaments. He later learned music under the famous music director and composer V Balsara (who has a wide contribution to introducing Indian classical music on the piano). Sourendro went on to attend music classes under the legendary sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan who was known to introduce the "Gayaki Ang"(style mimicking vocal music)in the instrumental playing format. In 2005, they started off with a maiden European tour of concerts and established their brand You & I and on December 17th, 2005 they were launched by the then Governor of West Bengal - Sri Gopal Krishna Gandhi. As Sourendro-Soumyojit started touring Europe for concerts regularly, they came in contact with Prof. Martin Keubert in Cologne, who Sourendro idolized to learn modern western techniques and playing styles.

Career and collaboration

The pianist-vocalist duo created their own soundscape in collaboration with many composers, songwriters, performers, and music producers of their times. They composed music across various genres with experimental musicians to classical musicians, Bollywood playback singers to ghazal maestros to folk legends in India. They collaborated with them on curated projects where these legends and artists feature. The football Legend PELE [1]has sung with the duo, Asha Bhosle has voiced for this young composers duo. Their first movie music composition brought them the Indian MMA awards. The duo's music series TAGORE & WE[2] got them the ABP Samman and recognition all across the globe as distinct inventors of a new interpretation of Rabindrasangeet which got great accolades from the famous lyricist, poet, and author - Gulzar. They performed LIVE on stage and on Youtube singles with legends like Sharmila Tagore[3], Aparna Sen[4], Kavita Krishnamurti, Rekha Bhardwaj[5], Runa Laila, Sunidhi Chauhan, the famous German music producer Stephan Stoppok .They also featured in Stoppok's German Album Stoppok Hits in 2007 called Dein Gluck - Indische version. They were the only ones to work on Live productions with the legendary filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh. Their epical works include JAYA HEY – the 40 legends led Indian national anthem which they presented together with Dr. M Balamuralikrishna, Pt. Shiv Kr. Sharma, Rashid Khan to Pt. Jasraj, Bollywood icons like Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Jagjit Singh to name a few. Dekha Hobe ei Banglae is their iconic video on Bengal with 100 superstars across 19 districts of Bengal which was highly acclaimed. They have performed at the famous Rudolfstadt festival, Moers Festival, WDR,[6] Deutsche Welle to the prestigious Nehru Centre, London. They have performed for the Prime Minister and the President of India. The duo has traveled all across Europe, the USA, UK, Singapore, Australia, and the middle east, besides performing in all corners of India with their creative productions. They had the rare opportunity to perform at The BRITISH MUSEUM,[7] at the International Cricket Test Match at the Eden Gardens[8], International Book Fair, the Gilley’@Dallas. They presented the World Music Day[9] - Kolkata Chapter, and the INSPIRED INDIA CONCERT and are directors of several cultural festivals[10] and productions in India and abroad. They have produced Broadway-style Musicals MAHABHARATA & BOMBAY MERI JAAN which got them great accolades. Their latest musical named KOHINOOR[11] is a great hit. They deliver inspirational lectures/musical demonstrations for world-famous platforms like TedTalks. Sourendro-Soumyojit regularly participates in different Literature Meets across the globe which promotes Indian music and their innovative ideas. They delivered lectures at The Samford School of Music (Alabama), Euskirchen School of Music (Germany). They are a direct connection to the youth and have huge musical followership digitally and physically all across the globe. They in the year 2020 are very active in supporting cyclone victims to COVID victims through their projects.#BeForBengal is their new project that covers support to innumerable people in the world heritage site Sunderbans, West Bengal.

They have been interviewed by the international public service broadcaster BBC to Channel 5 to WDR, Deutsche Welle. They have elaborately spoken on the influences of Indian music with Stadt Unzeigar, West Deutscher Rundfunk to Mumbai Times. They featured in other digital news media groups like Indiatimes[12], Hindusthan Times Delhi, the Hindu, The Telegraph[13], Society. They have been a part of The Micheal Portillo documentary of the stories of the Raj.
