Sopnendu Mohanty is currently the Chief FinTech Officer at the Monetary Authority of Singapore.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]
Mohanty's career spans over two decades of leadership roles involving various decision-making positions in finance, technology and innovation.[5]
Mohanty also serves as an advisor in various committees in international organizations in areas of Fintech, Financial inclusion and Financial Innovation, including the National University of Singapore, Mojaloop Foundation, Global Financial Literacy Excellence Centre, International Monetary Fund, and the Indian State Government of Odisha.[4][6][11][12][13][14]
Early life & Education
Mohanty was born in Cuttack, and grew up in Balasore in the Indian state of Orissa (currently Odisha).[8][15]
He did his studies in Orissa state and then at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra in Ranchi, the capital of the Indian state of Jharkhand.[8][15]
Career
Citi Bank
Mohanty spent 18 years at Citi with various leadership positions covering technology, operations and innovations.[7][8][10]
He was involved in various innovative smart banking initiatives, which included patented works as co-inventor.[7][8][10]
He finally served at Citi as the Head of Global Consumer Lab Network & Programs.[7][8][10]
Monetary Authority of Singapore(MAS)
Mohanty joined the Monetary Authority of Singapore as the Chief Fintech Officer on Aug 1, 2015, to drive the technology-led innovation adoption for becoming a Smart Financial Center as part of the Government of Singapore Government's goal to become a Smart Nation by 2020.[1][8]
He leads the newly established FinTech & Innovation Group(FTIG) at the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).[1][10]
Mohanty initiated a number of initiatives that have given Singapore a global fintech hub status and the investments in fintech ventures risen from US$ 20 million in 2014 to US$ 1.1 billion in 2020 which resulted in thousands of new jobs created.[16][10][9]
The key industry initiatives launched under Mohanty's watch include Singapore FinTech Festival, Application Programming Interface Exchange, Project UBIN, Proxtera Platform etc.[16][10]
Government of Odisha
Indian state Government of Odisha has appointed Mohanty as the state’s advisor to facilitate the state’s financial inclusion.[4][6]
He closely works in coordination with the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's Office.[4][6]
Mohanty’s role is in his personal capacity without getting any remuneration.[4][6]
Inventions
Mohanty has co-invented a number of patented works (at USTPO) while he was working at Citi;[7][8][10]
- designing interactive devices for digitally-enabled customer touchpoints (United States Patent: 10,861,089)
- advancing call verification and authentication process by allowing an electronic transaction to be performed upon determining, via biometric data, that an authorized individual is conducting the transaction (United States Patent: 10,074,089)
- designing a prototype of Next-Gen ATMs with enhanced functionality of completing a transaction at a financial transaction terminal using a mobile device (United States Patent: 8,972,297) / (United States Patent: D722,739)
Recognition
Mohanty has been recognized internationally as a FinTech thought leader.[5][10]
He was on the list of Fintech's Most Powerful Dealmakers of 2016 by Institutional Investor.[7]
He was recognized as the IT Leader of the year (2019) by the Singapore Computer Society.[10]
He was named the "Market Reformer of the Year" by International Financial Law Review(IFLR), Euromoney in 2018.[5][10]
