Song Yue Ting (November 6, 1978 - August 9, 2002) (Chinese Name: 宋岳庭, internet alias: M80) was a Taiwanese rapper, lyricist, composer, and singer.[1]He was hailed as the "voice of the underprivileged," using his lyrics to reveal the darkness and sorrow of society.[2] He passed away at the age of 23 due to cancer. After his death, his album "Life's a Struggle" won the Best Lyricist Award in the 15th Golden Melody Awards for pop music works.
Biography
Song Yueting was born on November 6, 1978, in Taipei, Taiwan. In 1987, at the age of 9, he was interviewed by China Television as a child prodigy.[3][4] He loved comics and was able to create and draw his own from a young age. He also enjoyed other forms of art, with Vincent van Gogh being his favorite painter. Song Yueting loved dancing and sports, and was known as a dance king among his friends. He constantly invented new dance moves for others to imitate. Although he had no formal music training, he had boundless creativity, using his genuine emotions for improvisation.[5]
As a teenager, Song Yueting suffered from severe allergies, so his mother sent him abroad to study. At the age of 14, he went to the United States to study, living in several different places before finally moving to California in 1995 to live with his younger brother and support each other. At the age of 19, Song Yueting pretended to be a member of the Chinese Youth Gang to threaten someone who had bullied his friend. As a result, he was jailed for three months and placed on probation for three years.[6]
In May 2001, Song Yueting discovered he had stage III bone cancer. He fought the disease for over a year, losing the opportunity to enter the music industry, and passed away on August 9, 2002.
In 2003, Song Yueting's mother and brother found music he had recorded on a tape recorder while sorting through his belongings, and released it as the album "Life's a Struggle." The songs featured a large number of double rhymes, a first for Chinese rap music.
In 2004, the song "Life's a Struggle" won the "Best Lyricist Award" in the Pop Music Works category at the 15th Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan, and the award was received on his behalf by his mother and brother.。
In 2005, the album "Song Yueting's Feathers" was officially released.
