Sonari Glinton is an American radio and podcast journalist. Glinton was a producer and correspondent for many years at NPR[1].[2] He is best known for covering the auto industry, most notably for his coverage of the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal.[3][4]
Glinton grew up in an auto industry family[5][6] His mother worked at Ford Motor Company in its Chicago Assembly Plant[7] as did Glinton while in college.[8][9] He attended Boston University, where he became a student and mentee of holocaust memoirist Elie Wiesel.[10][11] Glinton began his journalism career at WBEZ in Chicago.[12][13][14] There he received a Sigma Delta Chi Award for investigative journalism for helping to uncover corruption at Cook County, Illinois|Cook County's Juvenile Temporary Detention Center.[15] He later became a producer for NPR|NPR's All Things Considered in 2007. In 2010, he began covering the economy and the auto industry for NPR's Business Desk.[16][17]
His stories have appeared on a wide variety of public radio shows and podcasts including: This American Life,[18] Planet Money, Fresh Air, Code Switch and NPR's Embedded.[19] A regular contributor to Planet Money, in recent years his stories have focused on money and culture with profiles of Desi Arnaz, and Soul Train. Glinton received an Edward R. Murrow Award (Radio Television Digital News Association) for investigative reporting for his work on Embedded.[20] Glinton has hosted many podcasts including Bring Back Bronco[21][22], The Story of Quincy Jones, and Now What's Next.
Raised as a Roman Catholic, Glinton grew up in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood where he attended St. Philip Neri.[23] He also attended St. Ignatius College Prep.[24] Glinton is openly gay and is a longtime member of NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists.[25][26]He lives in West Hollywood, California.[27]
