Smack, stylised as SMACK, is a trio of digital artists consisting of Ton Meijdam, Thom Snels, and Béla Zsigmond. Their collaborative work in digital art it defined by the use of computer animation to create visually engaging and conceptually suggestive works. Their artistic practice revolve around digital identity, surveillance culture, and collective human behavior.[1][2]

Formation

They founded Studio Smack in 2005 as a platform for their collaborative artistic pursuits in the digital medium[3].

Works and awards

Smack's portfolio includes various works that have received recognition and awards within the art and design domain. Some significant examples include:

  • Kapitaal (2006): This early work by Smack gained attention for its presentation at multiple festivals, including the Amsterdam Film Experience. The piece showcased their unique narrative approach in the digital realm.
  • Pimp My Planet (2010): Acknowledged at the Dutch Design Awards[4] and the European Design Awards[5], this work demonstrated SMACK's ability to address societal issues through their animations.
  • Witch Doctor (2016): Created for the Dutch rock group De Staat, this project earned Smack several awards, including Best Animation in a Video at the UK Music Video [6]

Paradise (2016): Commissioned by Stedelijk Museum Breda to mark the 500-year anniversary of Hieronymus Bosch's masterpiece.

In 2018 supported by Colección SOLO Smack[7] completed Paradise and reinterpreted The Garden of Earthly Delights[8] to create the digital triptych SPECULUM[9][10][11][12], which included panels titled Eden and Hell, offering a modern perspective on Bosch's central panel. [13]

Exhibitons

A solo exhibition titled Dreaming of Mass Behaviour held in Breda in 2017 showcased their creative prowess. Their works have been displayed at venues including London's Colnaghi Gallery, KIAF Seoul[14], and the Digital Art Center in Rotterdam.

Smack has been part of international festivals such as the Holland Animation Festival, Bogotá Short Film Festival, and MMMad Madrid.

Their 21-meter installation of Speculum for The Garden of Earthly Delights[15][16], exhibited at Matadero Madrid from 2021 to 2022[17][18]. This installation attracted an audience exceeding 90,000 visitors. In 2022 Speculum was showed in Paris during the Nuit Blanche.[19]

In 2023 Speculum will be part of NGV Museum Triennial in Melbourne (Australia)[20]
