Sisowath Rathary (in French documents Rothary, 1878-1946) was a member of the Family tree of Cambodian monarchs family, under the House of Sisowath. He served as an aide de camp to his grandfather King Sisowath of Cambodia and was a member of the Royal cabinet of his uncle King Sisowath Monivong.

Life and family

Sisowath Rathary was born in Oudong to His Royal Highness Sisowath Essaravong (1856-1906) and Neak moneang Keth. Through his father, he was the grand-son of Sisowath of Cambodia and member of the House of Sisowath. His father was the older brother of the king Sisowath Monivong. Prince Rathary was the first child of Sisowath Essaravong's eight boys and fifteen girls[1].

He married twice. From his first marriage with his step-mother Neak Krip he had one daughter Khun Hing[2] born sometimes between 1906 and 1913. Then he married Neak moneang Troeung Yoeun (later known as Neak moneang Yusen), ballet dancer with whom he had nine children, among them Prince Sisowath Sirik Matak. He had one last son from a third woman.

Prince Sisowath Rathary was described as humble, modest and religious[3]. He died in 1946 in Phnom Penh at the age of 68.

Professional life

Prince Sisowath Rathary was in charge of the Music of Cambodia.

In September 5th 1912 he was appointed aide de camp to his grandfather King Sisowath by a royal decree with his step-brothers Sisowath Sisura and Chattivong and his relatives Sisowath Duong Lakhena, Khanarak and Sophanouvong[4]. He held this position at least until 1922.

By a legal order of the French resident of French protectorate of Cambodia of October 26th 1926, he was appointed member of the administrative council of the Lycée Sisowath in Phnom Penh[5]. After the death of his grandfather King Sisowath, he was part of the Royal cabinet formed by his uncle Sisowath Monivong.
